One thing I like to do is to sift the cake mix so there is a more even texture throughout the ‘crumb’. It will reduce your listed mix time so watch your batter and don’t over mix or else the crumb will compact.
I have a question regarding the tip about adding sugar and flour, is it equal parts of each from 1/4 of a cup to 1 cup?
I put chocolate milk in my chocolate cakes, and Greek yogurt., but I did try the coffee tip and I love it. Thanks for the great tips!
Hi im Ashley
please note and I’m telling everyone! I keep a box of white/yellow cake mix in a seal tight container. cake mixes are no longer 18.25. So I add 2/3 cup to one of the newer scant cheapie cheater cake mixes and then continue to use as required. This is for dump cakes, cake mix cookies, etc I am SO ANGRY. but I figured out a way around them!
Well Cait thanks for the heads up! I’ll be putting a new sealed container in my cupboard!
Today I’m making a chocolate cake and am adding coffee. However I’m using some coffee that is chocolate/raspberry!! Mmm I’m not sure if the raspberry will come thru enough to taste, any ideas? Also I add cinnamon to my chocolate cakes everyone loves them and can’t figure out the “special” ingredient! LoL I love it
Also think I should also use cpl other add ins to make it great? It’s for my daughter in-law so I have to make sure it’s good or I’ll hear about it.
Please any ideas? I’ve got to make it today as tomorrow I have surgery and won’t be able. Would greatly appreciate any ideas
So I am home in the snow today and craving something sweet. I googled things to do with a box cake mix and came across this site. I used a box yellow cake mix and added 1 c skim milk (all I had), 1/4 flour, 1/4 sugar, vanilla, salt, chocolate chips, Heath bar bits and then put crumbled Oreos on top. All things I had from caramel apple party I had in October. Best cake ever. I could not believe how those few extra ingredients with no frosting at all, made such a great difference in the texture and taste of my sheet cake. Thanks for making my craving so satisfying.
Three failed attempts yesterday. Substituted milk for water. Added and extra egg and doubled the butter substituting the oil. They keep overflowing, then flat and shrinking. I didn’t overbeat and followed the box directions and temp. Any insight.
split your mixed batter into 3 or 4 bowls. make them each a different, vivid color with food coloring (about 15 drops per bowl), pour each colored bowl of batter one after the other into cake pan. Bake according to instructions.,, WOW WOW WOW! CRAZY COOL!
salted or unsalted butter
Either is fine. I always bake with unsalted but add in salt. If you do not add in salt, salted butter is fine.
I am making a white chocolate cake, using a mix and Hershey’s white chocolate instant pudding. It will also have raspberry and cream fillings. I am looking for a moist, dense cake that will stand up to the fillings. What would be the most helpful add-ins? Extra eggs and milk or cream instead of water? Thanks for any/all suggestions!
I always add 1/4 – 1/2 extra of flour and sugar, an extra egg and milk instead of water. I really like the results! 🙂
I am going to make a white chocolate raspberry and cream filled cake for a dear friends 95th birthday. I plan on using a white cake mix (or two-want three tiers) and Hershey’s instant white chocolate pudding mix. Would the best options be extra eggs and milk instead of water? I want a moist, DENSE cake that will stand up to the fillings.
Hi, I am Ruth from Western Pennsylvania!
I tried something and it turned out so fluffy soft and moist.
First you sift the cakemix and pudding mix and combine. Make sure your ingredients are room temperature milk, eggs and butter. Add and extra 1/4 cup of milk than it calls for, add same amount of butter it says on box and and exrta egg than it says on the box, add one egg at a time after mixing the milk and butter. Then add 1 1/2T of mayonaise.
So , after reading all these emails I just want to make sure I’m not over adding things. I want to make dense moist chocolate cupcakes. Is it too much to add in all these extras to the Betty Crocker or Duncan Hines box mix: add 1 extra egg yolk, replace the oil with melted butter- but use a little less than double the amt ( ex: if recipe calls for 1/4 cup oil… I would replace that by adding a little less than 1/2 cup melted butter instead) , 2 tsp vanilla, 1/4 tsp salt, 1/4 cup sugar and 1/4 cup flour and replace water alone with both water and heavy cream. Does this sound alright? Is there something listed above I should not add??
I just bought the BabyCAKES CUPCAKE Machine. It makes 12 full size cupcakes in as little as 10 minutes. I can’t wait to make my funfeti cupcakes. I am going to try some milk instead of water. Thanks for the tips. Alot of people like applesauce instead of eggs. Never tried it thoigb.
I want to make delicious frosted cupcakes for my grand daughters outdoor wedding. I would appreciate any suggestions that you may have on the brand and type cake mix to use for red velvet and chocolate cupcakes. Also, please suggest to me which additions from your list to use with the each of the cake mixes to make them special. Thank you so much!!
