While I love a new, unique dessert like pumpkin s’mores cookies or a chocolate peanut butter pie, I really am a classic dessert lover. Chocolate chip cookies may be a standard dessert, but, when made right, they are better than anything else. How could anyone ever say no to a warm, gooey, melty chocolate chip cookie?!

The thing that I like the most about chocolate chip cookies is not just the rich chocolate but the chewy center. This is why I wanted to try making a massive, chocolate chip skillet cookie that would have an extra large chewy middle, full of intense chocolate chips. I also want a cookie that was fun to eat and serving chocolate chip cookie by the slice sure is an exciting twist on a classic cookie dessert recipe!

While traditional chocolate chip cookies will always have my heart, I am now obsessed with this chocolate chip skillet cookie. I actually have one in the oven right now!

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

There are so many reasons why you will go crazy for this chocolate chip skillet cookie, but I’ll just tell you about a few:

  • Easy: It is very easy to whip up the cookie dough, press it all into a skillet and bake. There is no need to scoop every individual cookie, making it a great recipe to make in a hurry.
  • Perfect for a crowd: If you are having a dinner party or a playdate, this is a perfect dessert to share. Make one big skillet, cut some slices, and serve it up! The recipe makes about eight large servings, but you can definitely get more slices out of the skillet if you are willing to have a smaller piece.
  • Chewy center: If you love chewy cookies with a slightly crisp edge, this is the cookie recipe for you. The skillet cookie is nice and thick, so the whole thing stays chewy and soft. It is seriously irresistible!

Recipe Ingredients:

  • Butter – I like to use unsalted butter anytime I bake cookies.
  • Dark Brown Sugar – Light brown sugar will work as well, but I love the intense molasses flavor of dark brown.
  • Granulated Sugar
  • Large egg
  • Vanilla Extract
  • All-Purpose Flour – Try using a gluten-free baking blend to make a gluten-free chocolate chip skillet cookie.
  • Baking Soda
  • Cornstarch – Adding cornstarch to the batter prevents the gluten in the cookie from developing, making it thick and chewy.
  • Salt
  • Chocolate chips – I always use dark chocolate chips, but semi-sweet chocolate chips or even milk chocolate chips are also delicious!

Variations

  • Add 1 cup of chopped walnuts. Chocolate chip walnut skillet cookie is delicious and a nice, easy twist on a classic recipe.
  • Serve the warm slice of cookie with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream on top. A sweet, creamy addition complements the intense chocolate chips. A scoop of vanilla ice cream is good on everything, right?!
  • Remove the cookie from the skillet before slicing. Flip the skillet upside down over a cutting board to remove it from the pan. Flip it over again so it is the correct side up. Then slice and serve! While it looks beautiful inside the skillet, it is a little easier to cut when on a board.
  • Use chocolate chunks in place of chocolate chips for larger pockets of irresistible melted chocolate.

Tips for Success

  • Make sure the skillet you use is oven-safe. It should not have a plastic handle or any type of metal coating that will melt in the oven. Cast iron skillets are my favorite choice.
  • Pull the skillet cookie out when itโ€™s just golden around the edges but still a little soft in the middle. Itโ€™ll continue to cook as it cools, which will ensure the center is soft and chewy.
  • Once you add the dry ingredients, stir until just combined. Overmixing can make the cookie tough instead of chewy.
  • Sprinkle a little sea salt over the top of the cookie dough before baking to make the flavor really pop.

Serving Suggestions

Although this chocolate chip skillet cookie is a decadent dessert on its own, you can take it to the next level with one of these toppings:

Storage + Reheating

  • To Store: Cover the cooled cookie, still in the cast iron pan, with plastic wrap or foil and store it at room temperature for 4-5 days.
  • To Freeze: Remove the cookie from the skillet and wrap it tightly in plastic wrap. Place it in a gallon-sized zippered freezer bag. Store for up to three months.
  • To Reheat: Reheat the cookie by popping the whole skillet back into a hot oven. Warm until the chocolate chips are melted again, about 3-4 minutes.
