Cheesy Scalloped Potatoes – A Cheesy Side Dish Recipe

This scalloped potatoes recipe is even better than I remember my mom’s being. It’s creamy, cheesy, and irresistibly delicious. Scalloped potatoes are a great side dish to any meal!

This is the best Scalloped Potato recipe made with thinly sliced Yukon gold potatoes layered with cheese and butter – you will want a second helping!

Homemade scalloped potatoes are a classic dish and are perfect with ANY holiday meal as a side dish! We especially love it for Easter, along with Roasted Pork Tenderloin, Hot Cross Buns and Carrot Cake Cupcakes with Cream Cheese Frosting!

Scalloped Potato Recipe Ingredients

The ingredients in scalloped potatoes are so simple and you probably already have the ingredients in your kitchen!

  • Potatoes – Yukon Gold potatoes are my favorite for this dish
  • Butter, flour, and milk – You will make a roux as the creamy base for these potatoes.
  • Cheddar Cheese – Sharp cheddar cheese has the best flavor. You can grate your own or use packaged cheddar.
  • Paprika – Adds a little color and flavor to the top of this dish.
  • Salt + Pepper – Salt and pepper give potatoes life!

How to Make Scalloped Potatoes

1. Preheat the oven

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

2. Melt the butter

In a small sauce pan, melt butter. Once melted add melted butter with a fork – whisking together.

3. Add milk

Next, whisk in milk.

4. Cook sauce

Cook sauce on low until smooth and boiling, whisking until thickened.

Add in salt and pepper and stir well.

5. Reduce heat

Reduce heat to low and stir in 1 cup of the cheddar cheese.

6. Add to casserole dish

Place a half of the sliced potatoes in a lightly greased 1.5 quart casserole dish (8×8 or 9×9 will work)

7. Pour cheese sauce

Pour half of the cheese sauce over potatoes.

8. Add potatoes

Add a second layer of potatoes and the rest of the cheese sauce to the top of that layer

9. Add cheese and toppings

Sprinkle the remaining 1/2 cup of cheddar cheese on top.
Sprinkle the top with paprika.

10. Bake in the oven

Bake at 350 degrees,  uncovered for 1 hour.

How To Make Scalloped Potatoes Ahead of Time

If you’re making these as a side dish to a big meal, make things easier on yourself and made them ahead of time

Covered and bake for 45 minutes. Remove from the oven and cool completely – uncovered.

Cover well and refrigerate for up to 2 days.

On the day of serving, remove from the fridge at least 30 minutes before baking. Bake uncovered for about 35 minutes or until heated through.

The difference between Potatoes Au Gratin and Scalloped Potatoes can contain only a cream sauce (no cheese) and Au Gratin can have a breadcrumb topping.

What are Scalloped Potatoes good served alongside?

This cheesy dish is perfect as a side to about any main dish. Our favorite is beside a Crock Pot Ham. It just goes perfectly!
