Ingredient Notes

See recipe card below this post for ingredient quantities and full instructions.

Ingredients for funfetti cookies, including oil, eggs, cake mix, sprinkles.
  • Funfetti cake mix – Any box of cake mix with rainbow sprinkles will do.
  • Oil – Vegetable oil or canola oil works best to keep your cookies moist without negatively affecting their flavor.
  • Eggs – These hold the cookies together and add rich flavor.
  • Sprinkles – Include as much or as little as you like! Use festive varieties for holidays and special occasions.

Variations

  • Choose a different flavor of cake mix like strawberry cake mix, vanilla cake mix, or chocolate cake mix. This opens up the door for so many other delicious desserts!
  • Fold in white chocolate chips for little morsels of chocolatey goodness in every bite.
  • Add chopped nuts like walnuts or pecans to the cookie dough.
  • Add a drizzle of milk chocolate, white chocolate, or white chocolate over the cookies after they bake. Then, allow the chocolate to cool and set before serving.
  • Create Funfetti cookie sandwiches! Spread frosting or ice cream on the bottom of one cookie. Then, sandwich it with a second cookie.

How to Make Funfetti Cookies from Cake Mix

6 photos showing process of making funfetti cookies, including mixing dough, shaping, baking, and cooling.
  1. Prepare the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F and line baking sheets with parchment paper.

  3. Chill the Dough: Refrigerate the dough for 15–30 minutes to make it easier to scoop and roll.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use any flavor of cake mix?

Yes! You absolutely can pick up any flavor of cake mix to make these cookies. The recipe does not change at all, but the flavor will depend on what flavor of cake mix you use. Try strawberry, carrot, or even German chocolate cake mix!

How is funfetti different from vanilla?

Funfetti cake mix is essentially white cake flavored with vanilla extract and studded with sprinkles. This gives it a fun festive appearance and a slightly sweeter taste.

Why did my cookies fall apart?

The most common reason for the cookies falling apart is overbaking. Be sure to keep a close eye on your oven! The cookies will continue to bake and set as they cool. So, be sure to remove them from the oven as soon as the edges are lightly golden.

Notes

  • Chill the dough first: Cake mix cookie dough can be sticky, and chilling makes it much easier to handle.
  • Don’t overbake: The cookies should still look slightly soft in the center when you remove them from the oven.
  • Use parchment paper: This helps prevent sticking and keeps cleanup easy.
  • Add extra sprinkles on top: Press a few extra sprinkles onto the dough balls before baking for a prettier look.
  • Use a cookie scoop: This helps all the cookies bake evenly.
  • Let the cookies cool completely: They continue setting as they cool.
