Flour: This is the base of the recipe. You can use regular flour, or for a healthier twist, try using wheat flour.

Melted Butter: Butter gives the pancakes a delicious flavor.

Baking Powder: This is what makes the pancakes fluffy.

Milk: Whole milk is recommended, but you can experiment with non-dairy options like almond, soy, or oat milk.

Eggs: Large eggs are needed to bind the ingredients together.

Sugar: Just a little sugar is needed for sweetness. You can omit it, but it may affect the taste.

How to Homemade Pancakes From Scratch

  1. Sift: Sift together the dry ingredients – flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar – into a large bowl.
  2. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients: Make a well in the middle of the dry mix. Add the wet ingredients – egg, milk, and butter.
  3. Lightly Mix: Lightly whisk the batter together until just mixed. The batter will have small lumps. Let it set 5 minutes while your skillet heats up.
  4. Cook: Add a tablespoon of butter or vegetable oil to the skillet. With a large skillet on medium-high heat, add 1/4 cup of pancake batter to the skillet.
  5. Flip: Let cook until bubbles form on the surface and edges are dry. Flip and continue to cook for 1-2 minutes until golden brown.
  6. Enjoy! Top with butter, powdered sugar, and pure maple syrup to serve!

How to Get Fluffy Pancakes

The trick to making fluffy pancakes is not to overwork the batter. Pancake batter is supposed to have lumps in it. When you overwork the pancake batter, it causes gluten to form. The result is a dense, chewy pancake. Only mix the batter only until all visible streaks of dry ingredients disappear. Lumps in the pancake batter are normal and okay!

FAQS

How can you substitute milk in a pancake recipe?

You can use other wet ingredients besides regular milk to make pancakes. I think that using buttermilk or even almond milk are both great choices. Coconut milk is a great option, too

I even think that using a protein drink as part of your ingredients could be a great replacement for some of the dairy.

How to make an easy pancake perfectly?

There are several ways to make your pancakes but if you like cooking on a griddle, read this! Have your heat set to medium and pour the flour mixture and milk mixture from the large bowl that you made it in.

Once the bubbles start to form on one side of the pancake, flip and cook on the other side.

Watch for burning on the undersides and repeat with the remaining batter.

What pan is best for pancakes?

A good, multipurpose non-stick frying pan will generally do the job when it comes to pancake making. The non-stick element is really important – don’t forget to add a little butter! You can also use a seasoned cast iron skillet.

What ingredient makes pancakes rise?

Baking soda makes your pancakes rise and be light and fluffy!

Why are my pancakes flat?

A flat pancake could be the result of an overly-wet batter. The batter should be thick enough that it drips rather than runs off the spoon—and remember, it should have some lumps still in it.

Are pancakes better made with milk or water?

Milk. Yes! This in addition to flavor also makes pancakes a great deal more tender.

These are the thinnest and least flavorful pancakes I’ve had. I’m really disappointed with this recipe. The photo is definitely not from this recipe.

Haven’t tried making it yet, but I will! Also, can i add a little more sugar, seems like it’ll taste too floury. But I’m willing to try it, I’ll respond with results!

This is a classic pancake recipe with so many variations and all oh so good, from adding lemon peel, and or blue berries even honey butter topped in place of syrup

  3. 3 stars
The batter was pretty watery and made the pancakes pretty thin and not fluffy. I cut back on the salt and it was still a bit too much. Overall, these were ok but I have made better.

    1. I’d also like to add that the flavor was very good and buttery. Just came out thinner than I like

    2. These pancakes are fantastic! I followed the recipe exactly and these are a hit with the family. I separate the egg and beat the whites and add the yolk to the melted butter to give it a little something special. Today, I halved the recipe and it was perfect too. Thanks so much!

I found these pancakes to be on the salty side. Next time i will leave out the salt since there is baking powder in them and add more sugar!

  6. 5 stars
They were amazing. So fluffy and buttery. Not to mention the crispy ends. A 10 for me.

    1. These pancakes were a hit!! followed the recipe to the t minus the salt and they were amazing. This is my to go for pancakes now! Everyone loved them.

  7. By far the best pancake recipe EVER!

  8. Made these this morning, subbed 1/2 cup AP flour for 1/2 whole wheat, added 1.5 tsp. Cinnamon. Yummy, quick and hit the spot!

Worst recipe ever. Ultra thick chunky needs water doesn’t cook through. Burns before it cooks because it’s so thick. Waste of ingredients.

    1. If it’s to thick just add a little more milk this recipe is pretty good…

  14. These are delicious!! So glad I came across this recipe! I wonder can I double up the ingredients to make a larger batch? They go quickly! Thank you!

This is the best pancake recipe I’ve ever used! I make it about once a week for a congrats-you-made-it-through-the-work-week treat. I added some vanilla extract and cinnamon for added flair. So good! So simple! Thank you!

  19. 5 stars
    So light and fluffy. Delicious!

  20. Can you use this batter to make sheet pan pancakes? If so, what instructions/ingredients would you adjust or advise?

    1. Kasey Schwartz says:
