If you’re looking for a great party offering, this spinach dip recipe will more than fit the bill. Although I love creamy Spinach Artichoke Dip too, sometimes a hot dip just isn’t an option for a get-together. Spinach dip has a lot of the same flavors, but it’s served in a more convenient chilled form!

I’m sure you’ve enjoyed spinach dip many times, and while you can definitely pick up a package at the store, it’s so easy to make it from scratch! Simple ingredients combine to make a crave-worthy dip that will disappear fast.

Classic Spinach Dip Recipe

You need just minutes to whip together the ingredients for spinach dip before letting it chill in the fridge for a few hours. It’s always welcome on the buffet table or as part of a game day spread alongside other favorites like Pimento Cheese and Classic Deviled Eggs. Or, bring it along on a picnic. You really can’t go wrong with spinach dip.

My version is served cold and uses sour cream and mayonnaise rather than cream cheese as its base. It’s made with a seasoning mix and Worcestershire sauce for extra savory flavor. You’ll use frozen spinach for ease of prep, although you can see my note below on how to use fresh spinach if you wish.

Vibrant spinach dip is perfect as a companion for fresh vegetables like carrots, cucumbers, and peppers, or you can choose crunchy blue corn chips or pita chips as a tasty alternative. I also love taking a piece of fresh pita bread and filling it with a generous spoonful of spinach dip, then adding in more vegetables and creamy slices of avocado for a light lunch sandwich. There’s so much to love about this classic dip!

ingredients to make spinach dip

Ingredients for Spinach Dip

See recipe card below this post for ingredient quantities and full instructions.

  • Mayonnaise – Use your favorite brand of mayonnaise.
  • Sour cream – I like full-fat sour cream for its richness.
  • Worcestershire sauce
  • Knorr vegetable recipe mix
  • Salt – You can use fine table or sea salt.
  • Black pepper
  • Frozen spinach – Use frozen, chopped spinach.
  • Water chestnuts – From a can.
  • Green onion

Quick Tip

You can try fresh spinach in place of frozen. You’ll need 10 ounces of fresh spinach that you’ll finely chop and cook in a splash of water in a saucepan until wilted. Then proceed with the recipe.

Variations

A few variations will help you make this spinach dip your own:

  • Swap yogurt for sour cream. For a healthier take on this recipe, substitute Greek yogurt for the sour cream.
  • Add artichoke hearts. You can easily make this into a spinach-artichoke dip by adding 1 cup of jarred artichokes.
  • Leave out the water chestnuts. If you can’t find water chestnuts at your grocery store, not to worry. You can leave them out of the dip and it will still taste great.

How to Make Spinach Dip

  1. Mix together all of the ingredients: In a mixing bowl, stir together the mayonnaise, sour cream, Worcestershire sauce, Knorr seasoning, and salt and pepper until well-combined. Fold in the spinach, water chestnuts, and green onions until evenly mixed.
  2. Chill: Cover and chill for at least 2 hours or until ready to serve.

Make the dip the day before you plan to serve it to let the flavors really blend together.

How to Store Spinach Dip

Store spinach dip in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days. Serve cold, straight from the fridge.

Serving Suggestions

Spinach dip is delicious with homemade bread and so many other options. Here are a few ways to serve this creamy dip:

  • With raw vegetables. Carrot sticks, sliced bell peppers, or cucumber spears are all amazing dipped into spinach dip.
  • Pita chips. Try serving spinach dip with a bowl of crunchy pita chips.
  • Pita bread or naan. Or serve homemade spinach dip with pita bread or soft naan for a real treat.
  • Bread. Cubes of fresh sourdough bread or pumpernickel are so good with spinach dip!
  • In a sandwich. Make a veggie sandwich—spread spinach dip on your choice of bread and then fill with fresh vegetables and maybe a sliced hard-boiled egg. So good!
