Red white and blue popsicles are definitely one of the best summer treats ever. They are truly iconic but also surprisingly easy to make.

Red White and Blue Popsicles Recipe

I grew up eating red white and blue popsicles all summer long. We often called them firecracker popsicles since they were always on hand as a Memorial Day dessert or a Fourth of July treat. When a “firework holiday” came along, you could guarantee that our freezer would be packed with red white and blue pops! 

I wanted to make red white and blue popsicles healthy and a little more tasty. Sure, the store-bought ones are great but homemade red white and blue popsicles are even better. My recipe uses fresh strawberries, Greek yogurt, and fresh blueberries to make colorful and flavorful pops that you won’t be able to resist. You definitely need to make these festive, sweet fruit popsicles this summer!

Ingredients for Red White and Blue Popsicles

  • Strawberries – One cup of chopped strawberries is about ½ pint of berries. 
  • Powdered Sugar 
  • Water
  • Vanilla Extract
  • Vanilla Greek yogurt – Greek yogurt is thicker than regular yogurt and it holds up better when frozen into a popsicle. 
  • Bananas – Be sure to use ripe bananas that have lots of nice brown spots. Brown bananas are sweeter and will make the popsicles extra tasty. 
  • Blueberries 
  • Gel food coloring – Food coloring is optional, but I definitely recommend using it, especially for the blue layer of the popsicles. The blueberries alone will make a deep purplish-blue color but adding blue food coloring will really make that blue pop! 

Variations

Here are a few ingredient substitutions and recipe variations that will work well. 

  • Add 2 tablespoons of vanilla vodka to the strawberry layer and also to the blueberry layer of the popsicles. Blending in vodka will turn this recipe into incredible boozy red white and blue popsicles. 
  • Replace the strawberries with a cup of fresh raspberries for a new take on the red layer of the pops. You will still get that same bright red color, just with a new flavor twist. 
  • Use coconut yogurt for the white layer to make tropical red white and blue popsicles. 
  • Skip the powdered sugar in the recipe if you want red white and blue popsicles no sugar added. Fresh fruit is usually sweet enough!

How to Make Red White and Blue Popsicles

  1. Make the red layer: Blend the strawberries, powdered sugar, water, vanilla, and red food coloring together until smooth. Pour the mix into your popsicle mold, filling each cavity ⅓ of the way. Place in the freezer to chill for one hour. 
  2. Make the white layer: Blend the yogurt and banana together until smooth, then slowly pour the mix into the popsicle molds, layering it on top of the red in the mold. Place the mold in the freezer again. 
  3. Make the blue layer: Blend the blueberries, banana, and blue food coloring together until smooth and pour the mix into the popsicle mold, filling it to the top.
  4. Add the sticks: Add the popsicle sticks to the mold and then freeze the red white and blue popsicles for at least 4 hours. 
  5. Enjoy: Unmold the popsicles and enjoy while cold!

Quick Tip

Try making these popsicles in disposable popsicle mold bags. You can buy the push pop bags in bulk online and then make a bunch of red white and blue popsicles at once! This is a great new twist on a classic summer treat.

How to Store Red White and Blue Popsicles

Keep your popsicles in the freezer inside the mold. If you need to remove the pops from the mold, you can wrap each one individually in plastic wrap and keep them in the freezer in a gallon-sized freezer bag. The popsicles will keep for about 3 months.

Ingredients  

  • 1 cup chopped strawberries
  • 1 tablespoon powdered sugar
  • 1/3 cup water
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup vanilla Greek yogurt
  • 2 ripe bananas
  • 1 cup fresh blueberries
  • red and blue gel food coloring (optional)

Instructions 

  • Add strawberries, powdered sugar, water, and vanilla to a blender. Puree until very smooth.
  • Add 2 drops of red gel food coloring, if using, and blend again.
  • Pour the red mix into popsicle molds, filling them ⅓ of the way up the mold.
  • Place the popsicle molds in the freezer and chill for at least 1 hour.
  • Blend the vanilla yogurt and 1 ripe banana together until smooth.
  • Pour the yogurt layer into the popsicle molds so they are ⅔ of the way full. Place the molds into the freezer while you make the last layer.
  • Blend the blueberries and remaining banana until smooth. Add the remaining 2 tablespoons of vodka as well, if using. Add 4 drops of blue gel food coloring and blend again.
  • Pour the blue layer into the popsicle molds, filling them to the top.
  • Add the popsicle sticks and freeze for at least 4 hours or until completely frozen.
  • Unmold the popsicles and enjoy!

Notes

  • After you add the white layer to the popsicle molds, you don’t need to freeze the pops completely before adding the last blue layer. You actually don’t want the white to be too hard or the popsicle stick won’t go through! Just add the white layer and put the pops in the freezer to stay cold while you make the blue. Then finish the pops, add the stick and freeze completely.
  • Make boozy popsicles by adding 2 tablespoons of vanilla vodka to the strawberry layer and another 2 tablespoons of vanilla vodka to the blueberry layer. Be sure to label these pops as “adults only”!
