This easy homemade cheesy refried bean dip is always a hit at parties! Made with refried beans, cream cheese, sour cream, and Tex-Mex spices, it’s baked until warm and topped with melty cheddar cheese.
I have no shortage of crowd-pleasing dips for you to choose from! In addition to this homemade bean dip, my Rotel Dip and Buffalo Chicken Dip are two more favorites.

Why you’ll love this homemade bean dip recipe!

Ah, bean dip. Along with hummus, salsa, and guacamole, it’s one of those instant party starters. Not only does everyone enjoy cheesy refried bean dip, but it’s also a cinch to make, which is probably why it’s so popular!
Bean dip is also easy to customize. Everyone has their own favorite version for serving at get-togethers and potlucks, whether you go simple with spiced refried beans or do it up 7-layer dip style. My homemade bean dip recipe is made with cream cheese and sour cream to add a rich, creamy texture, along with a lot of other additions to amp up the flavor.
- Super creamy texture: Cream cheese and sour cream make it rich and smooth.
- Warm and cheesy: Melted cheddar on top takes it over the top.
- Quick to prep: Just mix, spread, and bake.
- Easy to customize: Adjust the spice level to your taste.
- Perfect for parties: Game day, holidays, or potlucks.

Ingredients You’ll Need

See recipe card below this post for ingredient quantities and full instructions.
- Cream cheese – Use full-fat cream cheese for the creamiest texture, and be sure to use blocks of cheese, not the kind that comes in a tub.
- Sour cream – Again, I recommend using full-fat.
- Taco seasoning – Use the kind that comes in packets or homemade taco seasoning.
- Refried beans – Pinto or black bean refried beans.
- Onion – Yellow, white, or red onions all work!
- Tabasco sauce – Or your favorite hot sauce.
- Shredded cheddar cheese – Freshly shredded melts best.
Variations
- Use Monterey jack or pepper jack cheese instead of cheddar. A Mexican cheese blend works well, too!
- For milder onion flavor, use thinly sliced green onions instead of diced onions.
- Add diced jalapeños to kick up the heat.
- Garnish the top with tomatoes, sliced black olives, green chiles, diced bell peppers, fresh cilantro, and other Tex-Mex ingredients.
How to Make Bean Dip With Refried Beans

- Make the bean dip base: In a large bowl, stir together the cream cheese, sour cream, taco seasoning, refried beans, onion, tabasco, and 1 cup of cheddar cheese until everything is evenly distributed.

- Transfer to dish: Scoop the bean dip into a 2-quart casserole dish or an 8×8 baking dish.

- Finish assembling: Smooth the top to make sure it’s even. Sprinkle the rest of the cheese over the dip.

- Bake: Place the dish in the oven, and bake for 20 minutes or until the cheese is hot and bubbly.

What to Serve With Refried Bean Dip
- Fritos Scoops
- Tortilla chips
- Pita chips
- Crackers
- Bagel chips
- Cubed French bread
- Fresh veggies like bell peppers or celery
Storage Instructions
- To store: Cover tightly or transfer to an airtight container and refrigerate up to 5 days.
- To reheat: Warm in the microwave or bake at 350°F until hot and bubbly.
- Freezing: Not recommended — the texture can become grainy after thawing.
Frequently Asked Questions
No, bean dip is usually a mixture of refried beans, cheese, and other flavorful ingredients like onions and spices.
Yes, you can assemble all the ingredients, and store the dish covered in the fridge for up to 1 day. Then, bake as the recipe states when you’re ready to serve!
If you don’t want to use refried beans, you can use a can of black beans or pinto beans instead. Drain off the liquid. Then, use a wooden spoon to mash them up a bit before adding them to the other dip ingredients. They’ll give the dip a bit more texture than the smoother refried beans.
Bean dip has a creamy, cheesy texture and it’s usually mildly spiced. The flavor can vary depending on the recipe and ingredients you use, so feel free to customize it!
