Eating and drinking health is a way of life in our household. Lots of bright colorful fruits and veggies, whole grains, lean meats, water and milk make up most of our meals. Making sure our kids eat right is so important! While we eat right, we also have a yummy treat every once in a while – we are human! haha! But, for the most part, we do pretty well at giving our kids food that is good for them.
One of the ways we “sneak” in some extra nutrition is by making smoothies. I say “sneaking” in, but really our kids love to help us make smoothies. But, they’re so fun to make – they don’t mind what goes in! One of our favorites is this Green Goddess Smoothie!
Full of superfoods to start your day off right, this Green Goddess Smoothie is as delicious as it is good for you!
Spinach, avocado, banana, mango and milk go right into the blender for this yummy drink!
My 10 year old, Ella, just loves it!
And I love that she’s fueling her body with all things good – including milk!
Milk is a complete protein, which means that every glass contains a full mix of the essential amino acids our bodies need. It’s so very important for kids to get protein at every meal, especially breakfast. Getting enough protein in the morning can help kids feel fuller, longer, so they can start the day off right. Summer is such a busy time, our kids need all the extra help they can get! Without milk in their diets, it’s hard for kids to get nutrients they need to grow up strong. For kids 9 and older, the Dietary Guidelines recommend three servings of lowfat or fat free milk and milk products each day and two and a half servings daily for children ages 4 to 8. This smoothie is just one way to get those servings in!
- 1 cup – lowfat milk
- 2 cups – spinach
- 1 – small banana, peeled, sliced, frozen
- 1 cup – mango, frozen
- ½ – small avocado, sliced
- Combine milk with spinach in blender and pulse several times just until spinach has been incorporated.
- Place remaining ingredients into the blender and blend until smooth and creamy.
Did you know that in addition to being a good source of high-quality protein, milk offers eight other essential nutrients, including calcium, vitamin D and potassium, which are three of the four nutrients most Americans – including children – are most likely missing in their diets? It’s true! Growing up, I was always told to drink my milk, now I know exactly why! One 8 oz. glass of milk has 8 grams of high-quality protein to fuel your busy body!
Milk is a choice you can feel good about serving to your family. Many people don’t realize that from the farm to the dairy plant to the grocery store to your table, milk is one of safest foods you can buy – and in today’s world, that is very reassuring! Actually, all varieties of milk – regular or organic, flavored or white – are safe, wholesome and naturally nutrient-rich! So drink up!
To most kids, summer means months filled with playing in the sun, swimming at the lake or baseball in the park. However, more than 22 million children may miss out on milk’s nutrition this summer when they lose access to free or reduced-price meal programs at school. While food banks provide critically needed nourishment – including milk – to millions of Americans, it can be difficult to meet demand. On average, food banks are only able to provide the equivalent of less than one gallon of milk per person per year. More than 46 million Americans – including 12 million children – get support from Feeding America® network food banks each year. Fresh milk is one of the most requested, but least donated items at food banks, meaning children in need may be missing out on the essential nutrients, including high-quality protein, it supplies.
Although some programs like the USDA’s Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) help to deliver meals when school is not in session, the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) and the School Breakfast Program (SBP) do not reach children during the summer months. That’s why food banks play an even more critical role in helping children access nutritious foods when class isn’t in session. You can help feed a childhood in your community this summer with a small donation at milklife.com/give . A donation as little as $5 can deliver a highly desired and nutrient-rich gallon of fresh milk to children who need it most. That, my friends, is definitely worth your donation.
