This homemade waffle recipe is THE BEST waffle recipe you will ever have! Trust me! I have been making this Belgian waffle recipe for over 16 years, and anyone who has tried it confirms that it is indeed the best.
I promise youโll never use store-bought waffle mix again when you see how easy it is to whip up a batch of these fluffy waffles from scratch!
One of my favorite meals is breakfast; this waffle recipe is at the top of the list! Itโs sweet, but not too sweet, crispy on the outside, and perfectly fluffy on the inside. Want to know the secret to the amazing taste? Butter. YES! Good old-fashioned butter gives it a rich, buttery flavor that canโt be beaten! Donโt forget the REAL maple syrup to top it off! OH, and bacon and fresh fruit on the side.

Ingredients Needed:
This easy waffle recipe is so simple to make and uses everyday ingredients you most likely already have on hand in your pantry:
- flour – regular flour is best for this recipe
- melted butter – trust me. Melted butter gives this waffle recipe the most amazing taste and texture.
- baking powder – to make your waffles nice and fluffy.
- eggs – I like to use large, good-quality eggs.
- sugar – Don’t leave this out.
- vanilla – Madagascar vanilla gives you the best flavor
How To Make This Waffle Recipe
- Preheat your waffle iron and spray with cooking spray or rub a little melted butter on.
- Whisk together the dry ingredients – flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
- In another bowl, beat the eggs with a mixer until light and fluffy and pale in color.
- Add the vanilla to the egg mixture.
- Mix the egg mixture into the dry mixture.
- Add the butter and milk into the mixture- blending until just smooth.
- Let the mixture sit for about 5 minutes before adding to the waffle iron.
- Pour onto hot iron and cook until golden brown.
- Serve topped with pure maple syrup and butter or your favorite fruit and whipped cream.
Pro Tips for Making This Recipe
- Whisk: Whisk those eggs up nice and fluffy. You might not think it makes a difference, but it does! Adding air to the eggs gives your waffles a nice, light and fluffy texture.
- Use REAL Butter: I promise you that the taste and texture you get from using actual butter are AMAZING. This is not the time to substitute and use โhealthierโ options. TRUST ME.
- Don’t Overmix: When mixing your batter, do so gently. The batter will have lumps in it. Thatโs normal! Just mix until the ingredients are well combined and stop.
- Allow Batter to Rest: Allow your batter to rest for about 5 minutes before making your first waffle. This allows all the ingredients to mix and do their thing. Itโs the difference between light and fluffy waffles and dense waffles with a runny batter.
- Do NOT Peek: Cook your waffle until it stops steaming. DO NOT PEEK. You will tear your waffle apart and it wonโt cook correctly. Just put the batter in, (usually 1/4 cup โ check your waffle maker instructions) close the lid, and wait.
- For Crispy Waffles: If you want the crispiest waffles, eat them right away. If you wonโt be, a good tip is to preheat your oven to 200 degrees and add the waffles right on the wrack to keep warm. Do not add them to a baking sheet so that the bottom doesnโt get soft.
- To Keep Warm: To keep waffles warm while you’re whipping up more for your family, preheat your oven to the “warm” setting or lowest setting available.
- Rack Them Up: Place the waffles right on the rack when you take them out of your waffle iron. The waffles will stay crispy and warm until you’re ready to enjoy!
Waffle Toppings + Variations
The best thing about this recipe is that it can be modified to to your liking! Sweet, savory, or topped with delicious berries, syrup or whipped cream! Here’s a few of our favorites!
- maple syrup and butter
- nutella and bananas
- berries and greek yogurt
- peanut butter and honey
- chocolate chips and whipped cream
To Keep Waffles Warm
To keep waffles warm while you’re whipping up more for your family, preheat your oven to the “warm” setting or lowest setting available.
Place the waffles right on the rack when you take them out of your waffle iron. The waffles will stay crispy and warm until you’re ready to enjoy!
Storage+Reheating
Storing
If youโre planning to enjoy the leftover waffles within a day or two, storing them properly will keep them fresh and crispy.
- Cool Completely: Before storing, make sure the waffles are completely cooled on a wire rack. Storing them while warm will create steam, making the waffles soggy.
- Refrigerate: Place the cooled waffles in an airtight container or resealable plastic bag. Refrigerate them for up to 2 days.
- Reheat: To reheat, pop the waffles in a toaster or toaster oven for 1-2 minutes until crispy. You can also use an oven at 350ยฐF for about 5-10 minutes to warm them up.
Freezing
Freezing waffles is a great way to have quick, homemade breakfasts ready to go!
- Cool Completely: Allow the waffles to cool completely on a wire rack. This prevents condensation and sogginess when freezing.
- Flash Freeze: Lay the cooled waffles in a single layer on a baking sheet and place it in the freezer for about 1-2 hours, or until the waffles are frozen solid. This prevents them from sticking together.
- Store in Freezer Bags: Once frozen, transfer the waffles into a large resealable freezer bag or airtight container. Separate each waffle with parchment paper or wax paper to prevent them from sticking together.
- Label and Freeze: Label the bag or container with the date. Waffles can be frozen for up to 3 months.
Reheating
- Toaster: The easiest method is to pop the frozen waffle straight into the toaster for 2-3 minutes until hot and crispy.
- Oven: Preheat the oven to 350ยฐF. Place the frozen waffles on a baking sheet and bake for about 10 minutes or until warmed through and crispy.
- Microwave (Quick Method): For a faster option, microwave the waffles for 30-60 seconds, though they may not be as crispy as using the toaster or oven.
By following these steps, youโll always have delicious, homemade waffles ready for a quick breakfast or snack!
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, you can make the batter the night before and store it in the refrigerator. Just give it a good stir before using it, as some ingredients may settle overnight.
Wafflesย are made of a richer batter thanย pancakes, with an additional egg and oil. In fact, mostย pancakeย mixes offer directions for creatingย wafflesย out of theย mix if you decide to go that route!
If you don’t have a warm setting, set your oven to 200ยฐF. Place a cooling rack on top of a cookie sheet and put it into the oven. By placing the rack on top of the sheet rather than placing the waffles directly on the sheet, you are allowing the hot air to circulate right around the waffle to keep it crisp.
YES! You can freeze waffles in ziplock freezer bags and pull them out as needed throughout the week. All you need to do to reheat waffles is to pop them in the oven, microwave or even the toaster! This is the perfect make-ahead homemade waffle recipe from scratch
To achieve crispy waffles, preheat the waffle iron properly and avoid opening it too soon. Using a little cornstarch or substituting some of the milk with buttermilk can also add crispness.

They are not the best
I donโt want to sound rude but I donโt know if I would use this recipe again. The waffles came out soft and flimsy. They did taste good.
The kids and husband said they were delicious! I used honey instead of the sugar because we had an over abundance, made a double batch and froze some for east school morning breakfasts. They reheat in the toaster perfectly!
