How To Measure Flour Correctly For Perfect Baked Goods Everytime

Most bakers don’t think twice when scooping flour out of the bag when baking. As long as the cup is filled, the measurement should be correct, right? It turns out that is not always the case. Scooping the flour right into the measuring cup causes the flour to pack, which can add extra flour quickly! While you think you have one cup of flour, you actually could have up to an additional 3/4 cup just by packing it in.

That is why learning how to measure flour correctly is super important! It will make all your cookies, brownies, and cakes turn out exactly how the recipe intended. To make sure you know how to measure your flour correctly, I’m going to share some of my favorite tips and tricks that have saved me when baking.

How To Measure Flour With A Digital Scale

Weighing your flour will give you the most accurate measurements. I have found using a digital scale is super simple โ€” plus, it has many other uses in the kitchen. The digital kitchen scale always gives me the correct amount for my recipe.

Step 1. Turn on your scale and choose the correct measurement of ounces or grams, depending on the recipe.

Step 2. Place the mixing bowl or measuring cup on the scale and press the “tare” button to return the scale to zero.

Step 3. Fill the mixing bowl or measuring cup with flour until the desired amount is reached.

If you don’t have a digital scale, you can still get an accurate flour measurement using a measuring cup. Fluff up the flour before spooning it out and leveling it. The spoon and level method is the best way to measure flour without a digital scale.

Step 1. Fluff up the flour using a fork or a spoon. This will loosen any of the packed flour that has settled in the bag.

Step 2. Using a spoon, scoop the flour into a measuring cup over a larger mixing bowl. Scoop the flour until it is piled high on the top of the measuring cup.

Step 3. Use the back of a knife to scrape and level out the flour in the measuring cup so it has a straight edge. The excess flour will fall into the larger mixing bowl.

Tips for Success

  • When using the scoop and fluff method, make sure to use dry measuring cups and not liquid measuring cups.
  • Avoid scooping flour directly from the bag into the measuring cup. The flour will be packed, and you’ll end up with more flour than is needed for your recipe.
