They have everything you love about a regular waffle recipe —they’re fluffy, crispy on the outside, and totally irresistible—but they’re also loaded with rich chocolate flavor.

Best of all, if you don’t break out your waffle maker often, you can double or even triple this recipe and make a big batch of chocolate waffles to keep on hand in your freezer so you can enjoy a delicious breakfast any day of the week!

Ingredients You Need

You’ll need just a few ingredients you can find in your pantry.

See recipe card below this post for ingredient quantities and full instructions.

  • All-purpose flour – Or swap a 1:1 gluten-free flour.
  • Cocoa powder – You can use natural or Dutch process cocoa powder, but don’t use hot cocoa mix!
  • Granulated sugar – Adds just enough sweetness without overpowering the chocolate.
  • Eggs – Here’s the best way to crack an egg!
  • Vegetable oil – Canola oil can be used instead if that’s what you have on hand.
  • Whole milk – Adds moisture and richness.
  • Baking powder – Make sure to use fresh baking powder for the best results. This allows the batter to rise to create that nice fluffy waffle consistency.

What is the difference between a waffle and a Belgian waffle?

The main difference between a waffle and a Belgian waffle is the size and thickness. Waffles are typically about 4 inches square and ½ inch thick, while Belgian waffles are larger, at about 6 inches square and 1 inch thick. Belgian waffles also have deeper pockets to hold more syrup and toppings.

Are waffles supposed to be eaten hot?

Waffles are best eaten fresh and hot out of the waffle iron, but if you need to reheat them, pop them in the toaster or microwave for a few seconds.
