Buffalo Chicken Dip Dippers, Sauce, and Troubleshooting

This guide is the companion to my five-ingredient Buffalo Chicken Dip recipe. Start there for the complete oven and Crockpot directions, then use the tips below to choose the right sauce and chicken, keep the dip creamy, and build a platter of dippers.

The classic dip is rich, creamy, cheesy, and spicy. Pair it with a mix of crisp vegetables, sturdy crackers, chips, or sliced bread so guests have several ways to scoop it up.

What Is the Best Sauce for Buffalo Chicken Dip?

For the classic recipe, use Frank’s RedHot Buffalo Wings Sauce. It is a prepared wing sauce, not the same product as Frank’s Original RedHot Sauce, and it gives the dip the intended Buffalo flavor and consistency.

Prepared wing sauce has a fuller texture than plain hot sauce, so it coats the chicken and blends into the cream cheese more evenly.

If you use another brand, choose a prepared Buffalo wing sauce with a similar consistency. Plain hot sauce is thinner and will change the flavor and texture.

How Do You Keep Buffalo Chicken Dip Creamy?

Soften the cream cheese before mixing and stir until the base is completely smooth. Keep the finished dip on Warm in the slow cooker for serving; higher heat can make the cheese oily or cause the edges to overcook.

What to Serve With Buffalo Chicken Dip

Choose dippers sturdy enough to hold the thick, cheesy dip. I like to offer at least one fresh vegetable and one crunchy cracker or chip.

  • Carrots
  • Celery sticks
  • Chicken in a Biskit crackers
  • Club crackers
  • Crusty bread
  • Tortilla chips

At our house, I usually serve Buffalo chicken dip with vegetables and crackers. Sliced Italian bread is another good choice, and a mixed platter makes it easy for everyone to find a favorite.

What Chicken Works Best in Buffalo Chicken Dip?

Use fully cooked chicken. Well-drained canned chicken gives the classic recipe its familiar texture, while rotisserie chicken or leftover whole chicken are convenient substitutes.

Avoid heavily seasoned chicken because flavors such as lemon pepper can compete with the Buffalo sauce. Never add raw chicken to the dip using the short oven or Crockpot directions in the recipe.

I usually choose white meat, but cooked dark meat will work, too. Shred it into small pieces so it distributes evenly through the dip.

Best Equipment for Buffalo Chicken Dip

For the oven method, use a large skillet and a 9×9-inch baking dish. For the Crockpot method, use a slow cooker and switch it to Warm once the dip is hot so it stays creamy for serving.

Buffalo Chicken Dip Troubleshooting

  • Watery dip: Drain canned chicken very well and use prepared Buffalo wing sauce rather than thin hot sauce.
  • Lumpy dip: Soften the cream cheese and stir the base until smooth before adding the remaining cheese.
  • Oily dip: Stir it while hot and avoid holding it on High. Use the Warm setting for serving.
  • Dip gets too thick: Keep it warm and stir before serving; cooled cream cheese naturally firms up.
