11 Must-Have Baking Tools You Can’t Live Without

Measuring Cups

Baking is all about precision. Getting the right measurement can make or break your recipe. You will need both dry and wet measuring cups to measure accurately. A standard one-cup glass Pyrex liquid measuring cup and a set of dry measuring set with one cup, 1/2 cup, 1/3 cup, and 1/4 cup will take care of most of your baking.

Measuring Spoons

Just like measuring cups, a set of measuring spoons is needed to accurately measure small increments of vital ingredients such as baking soda, baking powder, salt, vanilla, and more. Most measuring spoon sets have a tablespoon, teaspoon, ½ teaspoon, and ¼ teaspoon.

Wood Spoons

For hand stirring, nothing stands up to thick batter as well as a wooden spoon. Keep a couple handy and be sure to hand-wash them when you’re done. Wood spoons are not dishwasher safe.

Rubber or Silicone Spatula/Scraper

Spatulas are super handy for folding together wet and dry ingredients, and for scraping the last bit of batter out of a bowl. You can get a spatula in either silicone or rubber—silicone spatulas have higher heat resistance.

Whisk

This tool is made for blending ingredients smooth or to incorporate air into a mixture. Steer clear from thin, flimsy whisks—they’ll just break. Aim for a quality whisk that will stand up to the thickest cake batter as well as scramble plenty of eggs.

Metal Turner

A thin metal turner is a must for flipping cookies or easing out a cake from a pan. Make sure you get a thin, flexible one is will easily slide under anything without squishing or breaking your baked goods.

Mixing Bowls

You’ll need at least one large bowl to get started, but a set of three (small, medium, and large) will take care of most of your baking needs.

Cooling Rack

Cooling racks allows air to circulate around baked goods as they cool and prevents a soggy crust.

Parchment Paper

Parchment paper is an inexpensive wonder tool that makes clean-up much easier while preventing your baked goods from sticking to the pan.

Baking Pans

Baking pans such as muffin tins, rimmed baking sheet/cookie sheet, cake pans and pie plates are all great to have as you are starting out. Invest in heavy-duty metal pans that will last you for many years.

Stand Mixer or Hand Mixer

Electric mixers make mixing up doughs and batters much easier and faster without tiring out your arm. If a stand mixer is not in your budget, a good, sturdy hand mixer will work for most of your baking needs.
