How To Cut Watermelon (Step-By-Step Guide)
For Cubes:
- Prepare the watermelon: Rinse the whole watermelon, and pat it dry.
- Slice in half: Place the watermelon on a sturdy cutting board. Hold one hand to steady the watermelon while using the other hand to slice it half crosswise with a sharp kitchen knife. This will create two circular halves.
- Remove the stem: Slice off the stem from both halves.
- Remove the rind and white flesh: Place one half of the watermelon cut side down on the cutting board. Steady the watermelon with one hand, and angle the knife with the other hand on the side of the melon. Move the knife downwards towards the cutting board to cut off the rind and white flesh. Work your way around until only the watermelon flesh is left. Repeat this for the other half of the watermelon.
- Cut into cubes: Slice the watermelon into equal thirds for both halves. Then, slice the thirds into uniform cubes. Enjoy!
For Wedges:
- Prepare the watermelon: Rinse the whole watermelon, and pat it dry.
- Slice in half: Place the watermelon on a sturdy cutting board. Hold one hand to steady the watermelon while using the other hand to slice it in half lengthwise with a sharp kitchen knife. This will create two oblong halves.
- Remove the stem: Slice off the stem from both halves.
- Cut in half again: Place one half of the watermelon cut side down on the cutting board. Steady the watermelon with one hand, and slice the oblong half down the middle. Repeat this with the other oblong half. You should now have 4 pieces of cut watermelon.
- Slice into wedges: Place one-quarter on the cutting board, and slice crosswise into uniform-sized wedges. Repeat this for the remaining quarters. You can choose to leave the rind and white flesh on, or remove it before serving.

Tips + Tricks
- A watermelon is ripe if it sounds hollow when you tap it. The bottom of the melon has what is known as a “field spot” which should be yellow when the watermelon is ripe.
- You always want a juicy watermelon! For the best results, pick up the melons, and select one that is heavy. This indicates that it is heavy with natural juice, meaning it’s extra sweet!
- Leftover slices or cubes of watermelon can be blended and stored in ice trays in the freezer – perfect for smoothies, cocktails, and mocktails all year round.
