Chocolate Chip Skillet Cookie Ingredients
You will need traditional chocolate chip cookie ingredients for this skillet cookie recipe.

See recipe card below this post for ingredient quantities and full instructions.
- Butter – I like to use unsalted butter anytime I bake cookies.
- Dark Brown Sugar – Light brown sugar will work as well, but I love the intense molasses flavor of dark brown.
- Granulated Sugar
- Large Egg
- Vanilla Extract
- All-Purpose Flour – Learn more: How To Measure Flour Correctly
- Baking Soda
- Cornstarch – Adding cornstarch to the batter prevents the gluten in the cookie from developing, making it thick and chewy.
- Salt
- Chocolate Chips – I always use dark chocolate chips, but semi-sweet chocolate chips or even milk chocolate chips are also delicious!
Variations and Tips
- Use chocolate chunks in place of chocolate chips for larger pockets of irresistible melted chocolate.
- Add 1 cup of chopped walnuts: Chocolate chip walnut skillet cookie is an easy twist on a classic recipe. Walnuts are a great addition, but you can add other nuts like almonds, pecans, or macadamia nuts.
- Sprinkle with flaky salt: If you want to add a touch of salty flavor to the cookie, a few pinches of flaky sea salt is a great addition.
- Bake in a mini skillet or individual ramekins: If you don’t have a 12-inch cast iron skillet, you can divide the batter and cook in 3 or 4 mini skillets or ramekins, ideally 3 to 4 inches in size. Smaller skillets will bake quicker, so make sure to keep your eye on the cookies as they bake to ensure the gooey middle.
- Remove the cookie from the skillet before slicing: Flip the skillet upside down over a cutting board to remove it from the pan. Flip it over again so it is the correct side up. Then slice and serve for individual portions! While it looks beautiful inside the skillet, it is a little easier to cut when on a board.
How To Make a Skillet Chocolate Chip Cookie

- Mix wet ingredients. Cream together the butter and sugars. Add the egg and vanilla and mix well.

- Mix dry ingredients. Stir in the flour, baking soda, cornstarch, and salt until the batter is thick and evenly mixed. Mix in the chocolate chips.

- Prepare. Spread the cookie dough into an even layer in a 12-inch oven-safe skillet.

- Bake. Bake the cookie in the skillet for about 20-22 minutes. Let the cookie cook slightly, then slice and enjoy!
The secret to the best skillet cookie is when to take it out of the oven. It should be nicely golden brown but still gooey in the center. This ensures a nice warm and gooey cookie that tastes like it’s fresh out of the oven!
If you like it more gooey, take it out of the oven at 20 minutes. Or less gooey, take it out at 22 minutes!

Serving Suggestions
Although this cast-iron chocolate chip cookie is a decadent dessert on its own, you can take it to the next level with one of these toppings:
- Serve the warm slice of cookie with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream on top. A sweet, creamy addition complements the intense chocolate chips.
- With a scoop of Chantilly Cream. Fluffy and light, perfect for dolloping on top.
- Drizzle a heaping tablespoon of Caramel Sauce right on top.
Storage Instructions
- To Store: Cover the cooled cookie, still in the cast iron pan, with plastic wrap or foil and store it at room temperature for 4-5 days.
- To Freeze: Remove the cookie from the skillet and wrap it tightly in plastic wrap. Place it in a gallon-sized zippered freezer bag. Store for up to three months.

Chocolate Chip Skillet Cookie Recipe
Equipment
- Mixing bowl
- Electric mixer
- 12" Oven Safe skillet
- Rubber Spatula or large spoon
- Measuring cups
- measuring spoons
Ingredients
- 8 Tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
- ½ cup dark brown sugar
- ½ cup granulated sugar
- 1 egg
- 1 ½ Tablespoons vanilla extract
- 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- ¾ teaspoon baking soda
- 2 teaspoons cornstarch
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 1 ½ cups chocolate chips
Instructions
- Gather your ingredients. Preheat the oven to 350°F.
- Mix the wet ingredients. In a bowl, cream together the butter, dark brown sugar, and granulated sugar using an electric mixer for about 1 minute. Scrape down the sides of the bowl to ensure everything is well blended. Add the egg and vanilla, and mix again until smooth.
- Combine the dry ingredients. In a separate large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, cornstarch, and salt. Gradually add the dry mixture to the wet mixture, stirring until a thick cookie dough forms. Be careful not to overmix, as this can make the cookie tough.
- Add the chocolate chips. Stir in the chocolate chips by hand until evenly distributed.
- Prepare the skillet. Spread the cookie dough evenly in a 12-inch oven-safe skillet. The dough will be thin but will puff up as it bakes.
- Bake for 20-22 minutes, or until the cookie is golden brown but still gooey in the center.

Notes
- Make sure the skillet you use is oven-safe. It should not have a plastic handle or any type of metal coating that will melt in the oven. Cast iron skillets are my favorite choice.
- Pull the skillet cookie out when it’s just golden around the edges but still a little soft in the middle. It’ll continue to cook as it cools, which will ensure the center is soft and chewy.
- Once you add the dry ingredients, stir until just combined. Overmixing can make the cookie tough instead of chewy.
- Sprinkle a little sea salt over the top of the cookie dough before baking to make the flavor really pop.
