Why you’ll love this slow cooker casserole!

There’s nothing quite like that warm, creamy, crunchy bite of green bean casserole—especially on Thanksgiving. (Truth be told, I think I look forward to the sides more than the turkey!)

  • Totally hands-off: Just stir it all together and your work is done!
  • No oven required: Perfect when your oven is occupied with turkey and other sides.

Ingredients for Slow Cooker Green Bean Casserole

You only need 4 ingredients!

ingredients to make slow cooker green bean casserole: fried onions, mushroom soup, milk, salt, pepper, and beans.

See recipe card below this post for ingredient quantities and full instructions.

  • Cream of mushroom soup – I love the classic taste of CampbelI’s cream of mushroom soup in this recipe, but I’ve also made it with Homemade Cream of Chicken Soup, which worked out well. Canned soup makes this super easy!
  • Milk – I use whole milk for richness, but 2% milk is fine, too.
  • Green beans – I use canned green beans in this recipe to keep it convenient. No trimming beans!
  • French fried onions – The best part!

Variations

  • Make it cheesy: Stir in 1 cup shredded cheddar 30 minutes before the casserole is done cooking.
  • Add more mushrooms: Add 1 cup of sautéed mushrooms to the base mixture.
  • Make it bacon-y: Stir in 4 strips cooked, crumbled bacon before cooking and a bit more on top after.

What to Serve With Green Bean Casserole

Slow cooker green bean casserole is what you want on your Thanksgiving menu! But it’s also welcome with your Easter ham, or on a weeknight when you need an easy vegetable side. Here are some of my favorite ways to serve this recipe:

How to Store and Reheat Leftovers

  • Refrigerator: Store in airtight containers in the fridge for up to 3–4 days.
  • Freezing: Freeze in an airtight container or freezer bag for up to 2 months. Note that the onions will soften.
  • Reheating: Reheat in a 350°F oven covered for 15–20 minutes, stirring halfway. Or microwave in 30-second bursts and stir in between to prevent scorching. Add fresh fried onions just before serving.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you keep green bean casserole from being soupy?

If your finished green bean casserole seems soupy, you can stir in a slurry made from cornstarch and water to help bind it together.

You can use fresh green beans that have been trimmed and blanched or swap in frozen green beans for the canned green beans.

Yes! Just assemble everything (without the topping) and refrigerate. The next day, let the mixture come to room temperature, then cook according to the recipe instructions.

Notes

  • Make a big batch: This recipe is easily doubled or tripled. Just make sure it fits in your slow cooker!
