This recipe for Sausage Balls is one of my family’s favorite appetizers—and you only need 4 ingredients to make them! They’re unbelievably easy and perfect for a party.

Everyone’s Going to Ask You for the Recipe

Make these sausage balls for a party and they’re going to disappear FAST. And then when people want the recipe, no one will believe this tasty snack only requires 4 ingredients: sausage, cheese, Bisquick, and milk!

This Southern favorite is a staple in my home, especially around the holidays! I make them as an easy appetizer, but also for a quick breakfast. You can mix, roll, and bake them in under 30 minutes! We love how every bite is packed with savory sausage, melty cheese, and a crispy golden crust. They’re even meal prep friendly too!

Tips for Making Sausage Balls

Follow these pointers and your sausage balls will turn out perfect every time!

  • Lightly spoon the Bisquick into the measuring cup. Whether you use store-bought or homemade Bisquick, you’ll want to spoon it into the measuring cup rather than scooping, which can compact the Bisquick and give you more than you need. And using too much Bisquick will result in dry sausage balls!
  • Make them your own. With such a simple recipe, there are a lot of ways you can put your own spin on it. Use hot sausage or add cayenne for spicy sausage balls, try a different variety of cheese, or replace the Bisquick with almond flour (1 cup) and 1 teaspoon baking powder for a gluten-free, low-carb/keto option.
  • Get a head start. Prepare and shape the sausage balls, then freeze them raw. Bake straight from frozen, adding a few extra minutes to the cooking time.

Storage + Reheating

To Store: You can store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for 3-4 days. You can also freeze baked sausage balls for 3-4 months.

To Reheat: Reheat leftovers in the microwave or in an oven set at 350°F. Bake until warm through the center.

Equipment

  • Mixing bowl
  • Baking sheet

Ingredients  

  • 2 cups Bisquick
  • 4 cups cheddar cheese
  • 1 pound sausage spicy
  • 1/4 cup milk

Instructions 

  • Mix together all the ingredients in a large bowl
    2 cups Bisquick, 4 cups cheddar cheese, 1 pound sausage, 1/4 cup milk
  • Form into balls using hands or a small scoop
  • Place 2" apart on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper
  • Bake in the oven at 350 degrees for 20-25 minutes or until lightly brown

    I love these! I use bisquick gluten free and only a cup and a half… I also had to add a bit more milk.. Maybe another 1/4 cup? But we love them!

        I like to freeze uncooked on a cookie sheet. I then store them in a Ziplock bag. I can then just take out a few at a time and cook in my air fryer.

      I used all natural turkey sausage (2 rolls), gluten free cheddar biscuit mix, and the cheese, but only about 2 cups. I omitted the milk and reduced the cheese due to being lactose intolerant. They turned out great.

    They were really sticky/wet to make, but dang they were AMAZING!! Used spicy chorizo sausage in them, and served with mustard, as well as some Asian sauces for the spring rolls. A couple of the Asian sauces beat the mustard among my guests! Definitely making again. Want to have some (cooked) in the freezer to pull out for snacks, or a quick lunch.

    I make these ALL the time – they are the perfect protein snack before heading to the gym. My mixer is here in MN…I want to make a batch of these and take them to our place in FL. I’m thinking of making them the night before and putting them into a Tupperware container and throwing the into my carry on. Do they require to be refrigerated or can I keep them at room temperature until I get there? Curious on your thoughts. Thanks!

      We don’t recommend letting sausage balls sit at room temperature for more than 2 hours. Unfortunately, it’s not likely they travel well.

    My MIL always makes these but she uses Buttermilk instead of regular milk. They have always been delicious. Does it make a difference on which milk you use?

    How many sausage balls per serving? I can only find 24 servings and the photo shoes 32 sausage balls.

      You don’t even have to use milk. 3 scant cups bisquick, the cheese, sausage and I add diced jalapeños. Using hands to mix it is easiest and takes a minute but yeah… don’t have to have milk.
