- Butter – I like to use unsalted butter anytime I bake cookies.
- Dark Brown Sugar – Light brown sugar will work as well, but I love the intense molasses flavor of dark brown.
- Granulated Sugar

- Use chocolate chunks in place of chocolate chips for larger pockets of irresistible melted chocolate.
- Add 1 cup of chopped walnuts: Chocolate chip walnut skillet cookie is an easy twist on a classic recipe. Walnuts are a great addition, but you can add other nuts like almonds, pecans, or macadamia nuts.
- Sprinkle with flaky salt: If you want to add a touch of salty flavor to the cookie, a few pinches of flaky sea salt is a great addition.
- Bake in a mini skillet or individual ramekins: If you don’t have a 12-inch cast iron skillet, you can divide the batter and cook in 3 or 4 mini skillets or ramekins, ideally 3 to 4 inches in size. Smaller skillets will bake quicker, so make sure to keep your eye on the cookies as they bake to ensure the gooey middle.
- Remove the cookie from the skillet before slicing: Flip the skillet upside down over a cutting board to remove it from the pan. Flip it over again so it is the correct side up. Then slice and serve for individual portions! While it looks beautiful inside the skillet, it is a little easier to cut when on a board.

Quick Cookie Tip

The secret to the best skillet cookie is when to take it out of the oven. It should be nicely golden brown but still gooey in the center. This ensures a nice warm and gooey cookie that tastes like it’s fresh out of the oven!
If you like it more gooey, take it out of the oven at 20 minutes. Or less gooey, take it out at 22 minutes!
