Ingredients

  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter melted
  • 1 ¾ cups granulated sugar
  • ½ cup brown sugar packed
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder Dutch-process preferred
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 ¼ cups semisweet chocolate chunks or chips plus extra for the top

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease or line a 9x13-inch baking dish with parchment paper.
  • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together melted butter, granulated sugar, brown sugar, and vanilla until combined.
  • Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.
  • In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.
  • Gradually stir the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients until just combined—do not overmix.
  • Fold in 1 cup of the chocolate chunks or chips.
  • Spread the batter evenly into the prepared pan and sprinkle the remaining chocolate chunks on top.
  • Bake for 30–35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out with just a few moist crumbs.
  • Let cool completely in the pan before cutting into squares.

Notes

  • Use the right pan: Use a metal baking pan (not glass) for more even baking.
  • Don’t overmix the batter: Stir until just combined for ultimate fudginess.
  • Get nice, neat slices: Cool completely before cutting for the cleanest cuts.
