Old Fashioned Red Velvet Cake

  • 2 1/2 cups cake flour sifted
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 Tbs DUTCH PROCESS Cocoa Powder
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 1 1/2 cups vegetable oil
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1 tsp red gel food coloring
  • 1 TBS vinegar
  • 2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 cup buttermilk


  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees
  • Lightly grease a 13x9 cake pan
  • Whisk together cake flour, cocoa and salt.
  • With an electric mixer, combine sugar and oil until combined.
  • Add eggs one at a time just until combined.
  • Mix in vanilla and red food gel slowly.
  • Alternate flour and buttermilk in three batches – mixing well between each addition.
  • Stir together the vinegar and baking soda in a separate bowl and add to batter. Mix until combined.
  • Bake at 350 degrees for 30-35 minutes or until toothpick inserted towards center comes out clean
  • Cool on wire racks before frosting
  • Frost completely cooled cake with my Cream Cheese Frosting
