What Is a Poke Cake?

Poke cakes are some of my most popular recipes on All Things Mamma, but if you’re a new reader or you’ve landed on this Snickers Poke Cake recipe from Facebook or Pinterest, you might be wondering: what the heck is a poke cake?!

Quite simply, poke cake is an easy way to dress up a boxed cake mix. You bake the cake as instructed, then you poke holes all over it. Next, you spread a layer of pudding (like in my Pudding Poke Cake), condensed milk, fruit puree, chocolate sauce, or another filling over the top. The filling seeps into the holes, infusing each bite of the cake with flavor. For this Snickers Poke Cake recipe, the filling is caramel sauce.

Once you start making poke cakes, you’re going to want to try ALL! THE! POKE! CAKES! because they’re really delicious and super fun (and easy!) to make. This Snickers Poke Cake is one of my absolute faves, though, because you just can’t beat the classic combination of chocolate and caramel.

Easy Snickers Poke Cake Recipe

What I love most about this Snickers Poke Cake is that it’s perfect for a party but simple enough that you can make it on a weeknight to celebrate a good report card—or nothing in particular!

Not only will your kids love eating this poke cake, they’ll love helping you make it too. Little ones especially have fun poking the holes in the cake when it comes out of the oven, but they can go a bit overboard sometimes, so keep an eye on them to make sure they don’t destroy the entire cake!

ingredients for poke cake

Ingredients

Here’s what you need to make Snickers Poke Cake:

  • Devil’s food cake mix – You’ll need a standard 15-ounce box and the eggs, oil, and water required to make it (or you can make it with mayonnaise instead, like in my Copycat Portillo’s Chocolate Cake. A chocolate cake mix will work too if that’s what you have on hand.
  • Caramel ice cream topping – Get the thick, rich kind that comes in a jar; it will solidify a bit after the cake cools, giving it that chewy, Snickers-y texture.
  • Whipped topping – The holes in the cake aren’t exactly pretty, so a layer of whipped topping helps smooth things over and make your cake look delish.
  • Snickers candy bars – Chop them into pieces to sprinkle over the top. If peanuts are your favorite part of a Snickers bar, you can add some additional chopped peanuts too if you like.
  • Chocolate and caramel syrup – The finishing touch is a drizzle of chocolate and a drizzle of caramel. Yum!

FAQ

How do you poke a hole in poke cake?

Use the handle of a wooden spoon and poke down to about 3/4 of the height of the cake. If you poke all the way through to the bottom, the cake will be a mess to serve!

Do you poke the cake when it’s hot?

Yes, you need to poke the cake when it’s fresh out of the oven. This keeps the cake from crumbling when you make the holes.

How many holes do you poke in a poke cake?

I’ve never counted how many holes I put in this Snickers Poke Cake, but you should cover the cake with holes that are about an inch apart. If you poke the holes closer than this, the cake will get mushy, but if they’re too far apart, the filling will stay on top of the cake rather than seeping in.
