Smoked Sausage & Rice One-Skillet Recipe

Weeknights can get busy! With after-school and work activities, homework, getting ready for the next day, and normal household chores – the day is over before you know it!

So, you need a quick and easy meal! I’ve got you covered! You can use spicy sausage or not – totally up to you! It’s going to be a tasty dish no matter what!

This past week I made this delicious  Sausage and Rice One Skillet Dinner and it was a hit! Making everyone in just one pan is fast and simple and great for clean-up as well!

Ready In Under 30 Minutes! Simple Weeknight Recipe!

You never know when you make a new dish if it will go over well with the kids, but this one was more than welcomed. They even had seconds!

Made with Hillshire Farm’s Beef Smoked Sausage, broccoli, rice, and cheese in one skillet – you can’t go wrong! AND the best part is that it was ready in under 30 minutes – start to finish!

One of my favorite memories is going to the mall with mom when I was little. I loved seeing the Hillshire Farms lady giving out samples by the store entrance. So fun! Hillshire farms smoked sausage is really delicious!

But now, you can buy their sausages in the grocery store! I picked up all the ingredients for this meal at Target AND I had a Cartwheel offer for Hillshire Farms Smoked Sausage for 20% OFF! Anytime I can get a deal on a meal – I’m excited!

Olive Oil + Butter – olive oil and butter together are best to sautee anything in. The butter has amazing flavor and the olive oil helps to brown.

Smoked Sausage – If you have Hillshire Farm at your store, this is my favorite! You can also use Italian sausage as well. Chicken sausage can be a simple way to cut down on the fat content. You can easily use different types of sausage.

Broccoli Florets – Cut broccoli into small bite size pieces. They’ll also cook faster.

Seasonings – This takes the flavor up a notch.

Instant Rice – You want to rice to cook fairly quickly so instant is best. You can also make Instant Pot Rice.

Shredded Cheddar Cheese – this is optional. But it gives amazing flavor!

How To Make This Smoked Sausage Recipe:

Step 1

Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add butter and olive oil until melted. Add the sliced smoked sausage and cook for about 5 minutes until sausage begins to brown.

Step 2

Add the broccoli and cover. Reduce heat to low and cook about 5 minutes more – stirring occasionally.

Step 3

Add the cooked rice, garlic powder and onion salt to the skillet. Stir well.

Step 4

Add the shredded cheese – stirring well until the cheese is melted.

Enjoy!

Remove from the heat and serve warm.

Ingredients  

  • 1 tbs olive oil
  • 1 tbs butter
  • 1 lb Hillshire Farms Smoked Sausage sliced ¼-inch thick
  • 2 cups broccoli florets
  • cups cooked brown rice - I use minute rice to save time!
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion salt
  • ¼ tsp pepper
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

Instructions 

  • Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add butter and olive oil until melted.
  • Add the sliced smoked sausage and cook for about 5 minutes until sausage begins to brown.

    Great blend of flavors and texture. However, WAY too salty. Onion salt, regular salt and the saltiness of the smoked sausage made it almost inedible. But some might disagree??

    I enjoyed this recipe, but I added a few things and increased others. I had grated carrots, so added about a cup of those with the broccoli. I used 2 cups of cooked brown rice using boil in bag rice…and increased the seasoning amts and cheese to reflect the larger additions. It turned out great!

    I made this and the original recipe is great. It’s a keeper! although I tweeted to fit my families likes and what I had in the cupboard. I added a coarsest chopped onion when I was browsing the sausage, used frozen broccoli, 90 sec rice packs, and add chicken broth. My kids like sauce. It’s is so fast an easy and tastes good. Thank you for the recipe!!
