How to Make Salisbury Steak

1. Form the Steaks

Combine the steak ingredients in a large bowl. Mix with your hands to thoroughly combine everything, then divide the meat mixture into four portions and form each into an oval patty 3/4-inch thick.

Tip: For an easy variation on this recipe, form the meat mixture into meatballs.

2. Cook the Steaks

Heat the olive oil in a large skillet. When hot, add the steaks and cook them for 4 to 5 minutes on each side. Transfer the steaks to a plate.

3. Sauté the Vegetables

Add another tablespoon of olive oil to the same pan over medium-high heat and stir in the onions and garlic. Cook for 3 to 4 minutes, or until softened and translucent. Add the mushrooms, season with salt and pepper, and cook until browned, about 4 to 5 minutes.

4. Make the Gravy

Reduce the heat to medium and add the butter. Once the butter has melted, sprinkle flour over it and cook for 3 minutes to form a slurry. Slowly pour in the beef broth, constantly whisking as you pour. Once the sauce has thickened, add the Dijon, Worcestershire sauce, and season with salt and pepper.

Tip: If the gravy seems too thick at this point, you can add water a tablespoon or two at a time to thin it out.

5. Finish

Bring the gravy to a simmer and set the hamburger patties back in the pan. Continue to cook until the Salisbury steak patties are done, about 6 to 8 minutes.

How to Store Leftover Salisbury Steak

Leftover Salisbury steak can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. The gravy will thicken as it sits, so you may need to add a little water to thin it out when reheating. I recommend warming it up in the microwave or in a skillet on the stovetop.

FAQs

What are good sides to serve with Salisbury steaks?

Mashed potatoes, Instant Pot rice, and steamed veggies (like steamed broccoli) are all great sides to serve with Salisbury steak. You could also try serving it with other starches like buttered egg noodles! Roasted vegetables are good, too—I especially love it with roasted broccoli.

What is Salisbury steak meat made of?

Salisbury steak is typically made with ground beef. You can use any type of ground beef that you like, but I recommend using 80/20 ground beef for the best flavor and texture. I wouldn’t recommend making this recipe with ground turkey, but you can use a mixture of ground pork and ground beef.

What is the difference between a hamburger steak and a Salisbury steak?

The main difference between a hamburger steak and a Salisbury steak is the gravy. A Salisbury steak is typically served with gravy, while a hamburger steak is not. In addition, Salisbury steaks are similar to meatloaf in that they’re made with breadcrumbs and seasonings, while hamburger steaks are simply made with hamburger, salt, and pepper.

What is meant by chopped steak?

Chopped steak is essentially the same thing as a hamburger steak; it’s a steak that consists of a patty of cooked ground beef.
