Tips + Variations

While these ooey gooey butter cookies are perfect as they are, here are a few other suggestions on how you can easily change up the taste and flavor.

  • Add in a bit of lemon zest to make your cookies have a citrus taste.
  • Make certain to get your cream cheese softened before using it in this recipe otherwise, the cookies will turn out lumpy.
  • Switch up the flavor of the cake mix so that you can easily switch up the flavor of the cookies as well.
  • Chilling the dough for 30 minutes is important as it helps bind the ingredients together to create that cookie shape.

Can you freeze gooey butter cookies?

You can. This is another reason why I love this simple recipe. If you have extra cookies that you’re going to be unable to eat, just pop them in a freezer-safe container and freeze them for later. They should be fine for several weeks to a month without issues.

And when you’re ready to eat, just pull out a cookie, let thaw, and enjoy!

I have made these twice now, first for Thanksgiving and then for Christmas. My husband loves them, so did everyone else that ate them. They are absolutely delicious. So happy to have a new cookie recipe. Turned out perfect both times!

    2. Hello! Thank you for your recipe! I followed it but left the batter in the fridge for a few hours. I did not think it would matter but it was so sticky it was hard to work with. I managed to get a few baked and they were SO GOOD! I can’t imagine doing the rest…it would take days lol any clue how or why?
