How-To Make A Butterfly Mobile

Create a Butterfly Mobile for your little one’s bedroom that is sure to be a focal piece! Here’s a tutorial anyone can do with a little patience and time at a fraction of the cost it would take to buy at the store or even to buy a pre-made kit. This project will take a while to do, (around 3 hours) but is so worth it in the end!

Supplies you’ll need:

* Wreath Hanger – found at any craft store, spray painted any color you’d like. I chose to use a  12 inch hoop, but any size you’d like is OK.*  96 Butterfly card stock cut-outs – hand cut, die cut or purchased from Etsy (like I did!)

*  Fishing line

* Ribbon to hang wreath – any coordinating color you’d like

* Sewing needle

* Glue gun

Directions:

First, cut 8 pieces of the fishing line at 18 inches long  and 8 pieces at 21 inches long.

Tie the fishing line pieces onto wreath with the longest pieces being towards the center of the hoop and the shortest along the outside. The diagram below is a good guide! When you’ve placed the strands, use a dab of hot glue to hold in place.

Next, take your ribbon and cut 4 pieces around 30 inches long. Then, you can either tie them onto the outer edge of your hoop or hot glue them on like I did. Take the ribbon and tie the ends together and hang from somewhere, like above your table like I did, to begin working on the stringing the butterflies.

This next part takes time, so be prepared to work for a while or intermittently – use 6 butterflies per strand and poke a hole with your sewing needle directly in the center of your cutouts. Next, string the fishing line through the hole and use a dab of hot glue on the back of the butterfly to hold in place on the string. Continue to do this with the next 5 to go on your strand, spacing out evenly. Be careful to not move too quickly or your hot glue won’t set and your butterfly will slide down out of place.

Continue to work from the inside out on your strands until they are all filled. I used butterflies in various shades of pink and varied them on each strand. Beautiful results!

Hang your Butterfly mobile from the ceiling or a light fixture. If you’d like it to hang down lower in your room, just use fishing line tied to the ribbon and cut at your desired length.
